Looking Ahead at 2013

Well, 2012 went by quickly. It was another great season for the farm. We produced and distributed more than 12,000 lbs of produce, we tested out a new distribution methods, the Lynden Farmers Market went well, and we continue to see the interest in this project increase.

As we look ahead into 2013, a few things come to mind. We are now recruiting for our new CSA - a subscription service for locals to receive a weekly (or bi-weekly) share of the produce. We are offering this service to anyone in the community but also looking for individuals and churches to sponsor shares for families we've been working with over the years. We'd like to offer discounted subscription to up to 10 of these families. Please let me know if you'd like a share or would like to sponsor a share for someone else.

We are also looking for new land. This could be land for lease or by donation that we would use to expand the farm and other A Rocha projects. Ideally, we'd like to have a house where we can room interns and visitors from around the globe. Again, let me know if this might be something you'd have available near Lynden.

Looking forward to another great season.

CSA for 2013

Five Loaves is beginning a new distribution method for next season, 2013.  We are starting a small CSA with the goal of having 20 subscribers.  This fulfills our goal of building stronger relationships with the people who are eating our produce.

Of the 20 shares, our goal is to have a certain number of shares sponsored by individuals and churches so that we can offer discounted shares to some of the families we've been working with over the years.

So, please let me know if you'd like some further information about next year's CSA for yourself or if you are interested in sponsoring a share for someone else.

The market is going well this season.  Last week, we changed the open hours from 12-5 rather than 2-6.  Still trying to figure out when we can get the most exposure.  Make sure you come on down every Thursday.

Five Loaves Farm / De Loach community garden award

Go to this link: Five Loaves Farm / De Loach award

We (Five Loaves Farm) have been selected as a finalist in the De Loach community garden award.  We are 1 of 15 gardens around North America to be selected - this is an honor in itself.   The next step, though, is that now we need to drum up voters to vote for the Five Loaves Farm video which is up on their website.  The top 5 vote-getters receive $4,000 and some publicity in Organic Gardening Magazine.

While recruiting online voters isn't necessarily my favorite thing to do, I see this as a good opportunity to make a fun video, spread the word, show people what we are doing, rally around the farm, and also potentially raise some funding to help us continue to do what we're doing.

The voting period lasts for 6 months (until August) so this is a long haul.  We're just getting started.  You are welcome to come back to the link the next day and do it again...and again the next day....and again the next day….

Be patient with the video to load - their video platform is slow.

Winter Update (Lynden Farmers Market)

Plans are beginning to take place for next season.

We plan on producing food from several location again next season and again hosting the Lynden Farmers Market.

We are currently in the planning stages of changing the location and day of the market from last year. If plans go through - it will be at the Centennial Park lot on the corner of 4th and Front St downtown (next to the public restrooms) and take place on Thursday afternoons (2-6ish). This is an effort in increase walk-though customer traffic and to take advantage of the busier weekday times downtown.

We are just beginning to recruit vendors for next year - please be in touch if you are interested in being a vendor. Contact Dave Timmer (dave.timmer@arocha.org).

As it is, we are putting together a proposal for the city to make sure they are OK with the use of the Centennial Park lot. The Chamber of Commerce is excited about the possibilities there. Its' true that this could be a great location - the new art center, directly downtown, and in the civic corridor. We will keep you informed as the plans move forward.
